Ralph Klein Park and Environmental Education Centre is the first park to be named for a former mayor during his lifetime. Ralph Klein, a visionary and tireless advocate on behalf of Calgary and Alberta, served a Calgary's 32nd Mayor and Alberta's 12th Premier.
Leader in Stormwater Management and Conservation
The wetlands in the park will use natural vegetation to treat stormwater before it is discharged into the Bow River. Several other energy conserving strategies and architectural concepts have been implemented such as the use of alternative water sources for building ventilation and the usage of green technology and materials during site construction.
The development of this park was made possible by funding obtained from the ENMAX Parks Program through the ENMAX Legacy Fund.
Ralph Klein Park is enhanced by the Environmental Education Centre, built above a man-made wetland that offers unique ways for visitors to connect with the environment through learning gardens, wetland viewing areas, study stations and interpretive trails. The creation of berms using materials from the wetland construction and the utilization of environmentally-friendly green roofs covered with vegetation, have successfully incorporated the Centre into the surrounding natural landscape.
The Environmental Education Centre fosters the development of a new age of environmental literacy with an emphasis on teaching, learning and training for a sustainable future.
Varied outdoor classroom settings situated within the park highlight the environmental attributes provided by wetland environments - a place that will offer ecological education programs and activities to individuals of all ages.
